The Rio Grande, looking upstream from the Central Bridge in Albuquerque.

First and foremost: It’s hot, and if you live in central New Mexico, the ditches and the Rio Grande are dry (more on that below).

So, have you put out water for birds and other wildlife? It’s super easy to do, and it makes a difference to your more-than-human neighbors.

Birdbaths are great if you have one, but you can also use an old glass or aluminum pie plate with some rocks in it. It’s really easy to do.1

(I will wait while you take care of that. Later, you can encourage your neighbors and co-workers to do the same.)

Secondly, a big thanks to Source New Mexico for publishing my commentary today about the Rio Grande. Earlier this week, river drying moved into the Albuquerque stretch. And frankly, that sucks.
